Some concise thoughts

I could say a LOT about this film, but I don't have much time. What follows is a short summary of the basics (please feel free to send a PM if you wish me to expand upon a point).

This must've taken you ages to do; it's a very concentrated piece of work.

I must say that it is simply beautiful for most of its duration. And that cat was incredible; you really made me fall in love with it.

The editing was wonderful as well. The "evil" symbolism was well done.

Some of the people "partying" and having fun at the end looked too marionette-like and cheesy. That ruined the flow a little for me. Less images of people partying and more of them being genuinely content and happy would've been the ticket for this viewer.

Still, a remarkable movie.

fourchinnigan responds:

You are absolutely correct about the ending. I took an easy way out and you called me on it. If I make the long version of this some day, I'll have to remedy that.

Some good stuff

Hey there. I liked your editing, and I also liked the goofy 1920s-era-like drawings. The choice of music was good as well. I actually liked the black and white cartoons with intertitles better than the colour one, just stylistically. The animation was simple, but it worked well.

Why's there so much violence, though? It wasn't funny or anything, it was just... violent.

Although amusingly goofy in sections, none of them actually came very close to making sense or telling a story (the closest one was the one with the rich/poor guys).

(5=average for me, so 6=a bit above average)

SeanSullivan responds:

It was a spoof on what people thought was violent of the old 1920's/30's toons... Just wanted to make a funny spoof on the ideals of 20's and 30's view on violence...

Not that bad, but not that great either.

On the positive side, you had some good editing of the action sequence in there. You actually tried to tell a story, which is definitely a bonus, and you did manage to tell it. Some of the drawings and animation were ok.

On the whole, though, several things in this were annoying for me personally. First of all, that music (I don't even know its name...) is so incredibly overused in so many films that it was hard to take this things seriously right off the bat. Why not use some free audio from the Newgrounds Audio Portal instead? There's some great stuff in there. For instance, I can see "The Toy Shop" by Simon-F really working for this submission, or maybe "Don't Tell Me Again" by MaestroMoodSwings.

The second thing was that most of the drawings and animation were simply not good. I don't even mean "not good" in the sense of bad anatomy or whatever. Even "bad drawings" can be beautiful in their own way. I just didn't detect a whole lot of artistic sensibility or consistency in there. Most of the time, it felt like you just drew your characters without thinking about it. Some of the drawings, like the one where the wolf is very angry, looked downright silly.

Finally, the story itself wasn't always told in the best way. The wolf somehow getting up onto the tree branch was unrealistic. If you wanted to create the feeling that the squirrel had nowhere to run to, why not solve that problem by having the wolf chase it into an open field or rocky hill where there are no trees for it to climb, for example?

Also, that dialogue at the end between the squirrel and its friend went on for just a tad too long, and overly slowed down the pace.

ActiveObjectX responds:

Ha, nice way of opening the review by complimenting what you liked about the movie. The song is from a movie, and the song was recently used in a commercial, those are the only places I think it has been used. its a relatively common style of music especially for cartoons, but whatever, that doesn't bother me so much. I took a listen to the audio portal stuff you suggested, they were alright, but I didn't feel they matched this movie at all.

Animation not good? Alright, you caught me, red handed. But you throw me off with the ' not good in bad anatomy or whatever, you just dont see artistic sensibility'. I understand that my character design changed from when I started the animation, to when I finished(hey, it happens, and it is clearly visible when I did the older stuff compared to the later stuff cause I gave the wolf proper anatomy, and gave the squirrel more character). You think I just drew each frame without putting my heart into all of them? I dunno man, tough statement to make. This cartoon falls into a style I am making my own cartoons in that you just dont seem to dig.

I think I know what specific wolf stuff makes you mad, and the only drawing I didnt redo would be the wolf hitting the nut away, which I'll admit, is bad, and shoulda redone, but I didnt have time and no longer felt the need for that.

My favorite drawing of the whole animation is when the squirrel is on the wolf's nose. I kept some sketchiness in that frame. I think you might be referring to the shot where the wolf is about to eat the squirrel(near the end), I'll admit, that is a bad drawing, but I found it funny, and decided to keep it. Not a good fit for you I guess, oh well, can't please everybody.

The story isn't in the best way? Its a cartoon! Magic man! The wolf got up the tree somehow, you dont see how, and it doesn't make sense, but it still happened! What any animation, and they pull stuff like that all the time. It seems more like this isnt your style of a cartoon considering where you suggest it should go. And if you follow the event of that scene, the squirrel ran up that tree, so if a wolf did that in the same amount of time, but a little faster, it could too climb a tree in that time. So it makes sense.

The dialog was four lines. Too long? If i made it any shorter the story/humor of that sequence might have been lost. It was supposed to be a change of pace. Oh well.

You still gave it a 5/10. Wait, thats a 50%, Fail! This cartoon didn't pass your test. So you gave 5 points for good editing, very few good drawings and ok animation. I'll take it, better than nothing.

Best collab I've seen on Newgrounds

I'm not a big fan of collabs in general, but that was definitely the best one that I've seen on Newgrounds. The music was catchy, and the drawings were good and rather poetic at times. Of course it made no sense as a whole, but there was enough scope and creativity in it to make it genuinely enjoyable.

I'm kinda sad that the score is so low (3.85 as I write this, and you didn't even win a daily award), but I think you'll do much better if you submit this to actual film festivals. Newgrounds is good for exposure, but its audience is a bit crude.

I hope you win a review crew award or something, at least.

Many artists that I like took part in this. A question, though: why didn't you add the people who have Newgrounds accounts as "authors", why just scarydoll?

Scarydoll responds:

You know, I didn't find any multiple artists option in the submission interface so I credited them in description. Anyway, I am the one who organized and directed the whole event and done the editing. Thanx for your comment!
PS I don't really care about awards. My point is to have fun while creating something. I hope everybody who animated and view this video had their fun either ))

Brilliant

I think that these are just brilliant, "jerry". Keep making more!

This might be my favourite film of yours because it flows very well. :)

This is really interesting

I'm saddened that you haven't submitted anything since this one. This psychedelic loop is quite hypnotic...

Just about perfect

Thank you for making something that was so fun to watch!

Great song, great lipsynching, great editing, good animation. Good job by everyone. This submission is just awesome, and I'm not really sure why it doesn't have a higher score.

The only thing I wished for at the end was for it to go on longer.

Really nice.

Stylish and effective. Excellent art direction in particular. And it synchronization with the music was done well, too. It wouldn't be out of place as a short spot on a tv channel.

Long time no see.

Wow, it's been ages since I've seen an episode.

One thing that's really changed in this one is that I don't find it funny anymore - there are still some amusing things, but the overall impression is a very sad one.

In short, I think it's no coincidence that you submitted it on Madness Day.

Good enough to pass judgement

It's all right, really. It's obviously just experimentation, but it's not bad as far as it goes. Its main sin is that it's far too short. Well, and that the animation is sloppy, but as I said, it's just experimentation...

Look for a submission called "Sloppy Fight 2"; it's probably the best frame-by-frame stick man animation on NG. Perhaps there are some ideas and techniques you could learn...

TheRealGreenEagle responds:

Yea, that was my main inspiration, but i wanted it to be different. Thanx!

Feel free to PM me if you want to see the scores to any of my music.
