great pixel art

I LOVE how you're making the best of the unconventional tools you've chosen to use. Pixel art is one of my favourite contemporary art styles, but it's rare to see it done on such a large scale - yet you're doing it and doing it well, because I guess nobody told you that you're not supposed to. ;)

And you say that you're making an entire comic series in this art style? That this isn't just the title page? Amazing. I hope to see more of it.

This image does require a bit more work - i.e. the floor that he's standing on is a bit rough. Still, it's already very good.

StarwolfTsuname responds:

No, I was not told about not doing unconventional art on a large scale XD Also thank you very much for the comment! Well, currently its a pencil comic on printer paper which really isnt turning out so bad, soon I will submit the two pages I have already here on NG but maybe every so often I will change my media and use ms paint to do a page for kicks :3

Yes the floor definitely needs so work, I do agree, thanks for the critique! :D

Beautiful

A very aesthetically pleasing piece.

The only thing I'm a little unsure about are the squiggles in the upper right corner, which look a little uncertain (though that could just be because some of them are drawn very lightly).

SukiWukiDookie responds:

I meant for that part to look unfinished/uncertain, possibly making the "center" of the piece stand out even more. Thanks for the comment.

Impressive

I only wish that the full-size image was a bit bigger.

This is clearly stream-of-consciousness drawing, and I can't really tell what's going on, but it hits at some sort of visceral level. You're obviously really good at this. I look forward to your future submissions.

The colouring, in particular, is great (and works a lot better than the one that you coloured manually, I think).

Gx9AchaoticMindGx8 responds:

Thank you for the score and positive feedback. Yeah, the one I colored manually (Spikanamous if your talking about that one.) in shop is the least favorite of mine Ive done, but I was really rushing it since I decided to colour it the last week of school so it was a bit of a rush job XD;

Fun! :)

I quite like this one. Nice colours, nice situations, nice expressions.

I'd recommend a few things, though:
-don't make the fullview image so large - it shouldn't be wider than someone's screen resolution
-start drawing these on plain blank printer paper! Just carry a few sheets of it with you to your law class.

Sorry about you getting unscouted again - I guess one of the admins must really not like your work. If you start drawing on plain blank paper, it'll immediately make your drawings look a lot more professional at a glance. So... just a suggestion. I can't rescout you right now because my quota's up, sorry.

Zepizza responds:

Hey, thanks for the tips and I really apreciate your efforts in saving me ^^

I quit my University of International Relations to go to another one, so I'm in a prep course which is FREAKING HARD, so my "art" is reduced to zero now...

But next year I'm sure to follow up! Thanks for the help!

Pretty good drawing

May I recommend that you don't scan your work in colour, though? As seen in this picture, that causes weird rainbow-coloured artefacts to pop up (you can see it on his neck, for instance). I've found that grey error diffusion, with black set to 0%, works best on my scanner for pencil art - but try experimenting.

Anyway, the sketch is pretty good, but definitely not your best work. The proportions are a little off here and there - i.e. the ankle on the left is a bit thin, the upper arm is a bit too long, the fingers on the hand a bit weird.

DemonBerserker responds:

now that u pointed it out i can see the rainbow stuff too. ill have to keep an eye out for it next time i scan stuff, thnx for the tip!

I love it

I disagree with the other two reviewers, who said that "the castle needs to have more detail". I'm guessing they didn't bother clicking on the picture to view it in full-view. The detail in this picture is really fantastic... I'm really impressed.

May I ask what sort of pencil and lead you used to draw this?

DemonBerserker responds:

yea i can see how the castle might seem a little plain to some peeps but in the movies the walls are big, plain and white so i didn't want to put too much detail in or it would loose the whole "glimmering white city" effect. and i actually used a plain ol' ball point pen for this.

I'll be honest...

...I don't like the way that you blurred your outlines much. Or rather, at all. The underlying sketch is great, but the computer effect does a great deal to lessen its impact. I much prefer your earlier sketches, in which the outlines are sharp and natural.

vexistential responds:

Agreed and understood. I actually like the original drawing better, myself...it's just not as polished.

Pretty neat!

Your skill with the Etch-a-Sketch is remarkable. Are you good with other types of drawing, also, or do you feel most comfortable in this medium?

I compared it to the original painting by fstarno, by the way. I can see the similarity, but there are enough differences that it seems more "inspired by" than an outright copy ("outright copy" would be bad, because that painting wasn't released under a free license).

Pianosketcher responds:

lol I wouldn't consider it an outright copy since its on an etch-a-sketch.
and no, I use original mediums most of the time. but when I'm bored I do this.
yeah it has alot of diffrences. if it was the exact copy that would be epic.

Hah, this is nice

Tea would be lovely, yes. I love the combination of top-hat, monocle, goatee and T-Rex. He has a great twinkle in his eye, too.

TheMagicStuff24 responds:

Why Thank you.
He was my first few drawing I usually drew out.
I feel the mustache tho completes it for I would love tea with a gent w/ a Mustache.
The Twinkle I actually picked up from a fellow artistic friend whom drew a character he claimed was Lumpkins? and he had that certain twinkle and I developed off said twinkle.

Thanks for the Review :D

The hair is quite beautiful

- excellent colours. But the eyes, unfortunately, are drawn a bit clumsily. The nose is a bit too thick... You obviously have much greater skill with real materials, so far, than with a tablet. As it is, this is a striking composition with a slightly bungled main focus point.

thetoughfairy responds:

thanks for your review, i haven't been using my graphics tablet very long, and this is only my second peice using GIMP so I'm still getting used to using it. I like being experimental with my art, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Feel free to PM me if you want to see the scores to any of my music.
