Wrath of the Anicopters

"Hahah"

date: April 21, 2008

I don't really have much to say, but I found this funny. Thanks for the laugh. :)

I loved the "song" especially.

Walk in the Woods

"Definitely one of the best things..."

submission: Walk in the Woods
date: April 6, 2008

...I've seen here recently. The graphics, direction, and sound were all VERY well-done. I really liked how you built one absurdity on top of another, and yet make everything understandable to the viewer! That takes a lot of skill, I think.

My only regret is that the story ended when it did. It would've been even more awesome if it had somehow kept going.

Completely nonsensical, but the morphing shapes were impressive and quite fun!

The Snap

"Good movie"

submission: The Snap
date: March 7, 2008

The only section which is truly seizure-inducing is the one with the flashing colours just before the end. I had to put a hand in front of my eyes because I just can't watch things like that. The rest of it was ok.

Anyway, it's a pretty good movie; it achieved what it was trying to do, I think. (I'm guessing that this is a movie about taking hallucinogenic drugs, yes?)

There is no plot or anything, but it's kinda beyond the scope anyway.

mr. dumpty

"I'm sorry."

submission: mr. dumpty

I must be pretty stupid, because I didn't understand the story/metaphor here. I even rewatched it twice, but I don't see how "birth" relates to Humpty Dumpty breaking in two and some little black thing jumping up into the clouds to become a bird. The bird could be a stork, I guess, and the black thing could be a sperm, but I still don't understand.

On to more technical aspects, I liked the animation of Humpty Dumpty getting ready for the dive - rubbing his hands, etc. The character animation on the whole was pretty good, though I didn't understand why one audience member was rubbing another's head. The choice of music was good.

Err, that's it.

Session

"Err, ok"

submission: Session
date: March 2, 2008

First off, I found it really difficult to get past the constant camera-shaking synchronized with the music. I still finished watching the movie, but it was an ordeal. Felt like MTV on steroids.

Secondly, about the "purpose" thing... seems to me that you are belittling educational animation when your own film is exactly that.

Thirdly... hmm. Well, this could've been ok. The concept was fine, I just didn't like the execution too much. You did have some good direction in there, but it was hard to see it through all of the "camera beat syncing". How about doing this in a different way next time, like with colour?

Author's Response:

The colour scheme was the entire point.

Ani-mraw-morph

"Title Goes Here"

submission: Ani-mraw-morph

The idea and animation was pretty good. I detect some influences of that whiteboard animation by Kristofer Strom, and maybe of the Newgrounds submission "multfilm"? Anyway, that's what it reminds me off.

But you did a good job. The drawings were quite imaginative, and I loved the use of your hands as part of the animation.

The big thing that I didn't like here (and I took off at least one point because of it) was the music! The music is really important for submissions like this, so it's really too bad. Started off well, but then continued playing the same 8-note melody for too long. Then when some guitar chords finally came in, they didn't fit in harmonically! Like fingernails on a chalkboard, man. And most of it after that just sounded a bit out of tune.

Flim

"Very nice"

submission: Flim
date: March 2, 2008

Watching this was a truly nice experience. Thanks!

I loved the choice of music, and the constant action combined with the very predictable pace. I think that this is the secret of a lot of successful movies, actually; "have interesting stuff happening, but keep it comfortable and familiar". I particularly liked the constant motion of the waves.

The character animation was a bit rough in places. The whole film wasn't very complex and could certainly have been a little more polished. But I think that the direction is the most important thing, and I can't find any faults with that.

Overall, the mood here reminded me of another great animated film that I saw recently called "The Lodgers of an Old House"... check it out on Youtube, you might like it.

Before I go, one last question: how did you create that wonderful texture on the colour surfaces?... thanks in advance!

March 2, 2008

Author's Response:

I scanned a load of different types of paper and cardboard and then adjusted the colour, brightness and contrast with Photoshop. I then imported them into flash and used a mask to get the shape right.

For a slightly more polished version yu should check it out on youtube. The link is in the author's comments.

The Worms Hazard

"Well,"

submission: The Worms Hazard
date: March 2, 2008

it's an interesting film, Kol-belov. The graphical direction is very stylish, and the direction felt like it had purpose. There were a few instances where I felt that you held a scene for too long, though: when you were circling between the Indians was one, and there were a couple others.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't follow the storyline, and I occasionally I felt that I was just seeing random images. Though I know that you wouldn't do that. MERGAN's post below cleared up a few things, but I still wouldn't say that the symbolism is very obvious.

I think that "Bankomat" was your most understandable film to date. One area to work on would be to make your metaphors more obvious, as they were in "Bankomat", so that more people can follow your films. After all, a lot of these "10s" here are from people who had no idea what your film was about...

Also... I don't know if you read these reviews, but if you do, just a question: what was your intention in making this film? What were you trying to show about virus-creators?

Bambee

"Not too bad."

submission: Bambee
date: March 2, 2008

A movie making fun of Disney, using Adult Swim-level humour maturity (read: not that high) and Ren & Stimpy-like animation (but less fluid).

I guess it's done well-enough for what it is, but it's just not really my thing.

The high points for me were the beginning (I think showing the birth wasn't even necessary, the build-up already made it clear what would happen) and how the "bird" thing connected with the ending. Oh, and some of the animation was ok (that is, good for Newgrounds).
