Feedback or Suggestions for Newgrounds

Posted by Esn Jun. 21, 2009 @ 11:32 AM EDT

The recent Newgrounds survey had the following question at the end:
If you would like to provide any feedback or suggestions for Newgrounds, please do so here:

This is what I wrote (edited into bulletins):

1. Treat the music portal seriously, not just as a source of free music for Flash authors - we have some amazing artists there, they deserve it.

2. Give users EXPERIENCE POINTS for voting on music or art submissions, just like they get for voting on Flash submissions. That may encourage voting on new submissions (how come 200 people vote for each new crappy flash, but new music submissions are lucky to get a few votes?).

3. Make the experience points system for each portal separate - someone who has a highly-weighed vote because he votes a lot on Flash may not know anything about music, so his vote should not be weighed more until he votes on a lot of music.

4. Make a "judgment period" for the Music Portal (that might also induce more people to vote).

5. MAKE A YOUTUBE-LIKE OR DEVIANTART-LIKE SUBSCRIPTIONS SYSTEM!!! PLEASE!!! THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, all the other websites have it. RSS is okay, but really limiting because you can't customize it. I'd like to be able to, for example, subscribe to USER-A's news and music, but not his flashes, USER-B's art, but not his music, etc. and have a record of everything that I've subscribed to, including a way to see whether I've watched an item yet or not (regular text if page has been visited, bold text otherwise).

6. Have an at least somewhat-customized ad system for the Flash portal, for example by allowing a submitting user to pick a keyword that best describes his submission, which will then make correspondingly-themed ads show up, instead of the same ads for the whole website.

7. Allow posts I made on other people's news items to be accessed from the userpage (like reviews and forum posts are).

8. Also, I'm sure you're working on this, but allow "favourite art" and "art reviews" to be accessed from the userpage.

ya man - I agree with you wholeheartedly - but speaking from experience from when my music has been frontpaged (I have a lot) - the amt. of reviews you get rivals that of the flashg portal - but your score rapidly goes down - more people in the audio portal isn't the answer..

and hey you're from toronto! I'm from hamilton! :)

Well, a lower rating seems like a fair price to pay for getting a lot of reviews. I've never been frontpaged, so I wouldn't know. Most of my work was submitted before music got frontpaged. Anyway, I don't submit frequently enough to have people constantly checking my page and I don't make music in the popular genres, so I don't think I ever will. At this point, I basically use NG as a place to host my music, without expecting that I'll get any good feedback or fame or anything.

As for music, I've been sporadically working on a piece over the last 3 years that's over 10 minutes long now. Maybe I'll submit it someday, when they raise the maximum file size again. :p

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

By the way, this is really useful for finding whether a work on the art portal was stolen or not:

pfft it failed - I uploaded one of my own images which is now on my server, on deviantart, AND on newgrounds - and it came up with 0 results - I take it it only reports stolen PROFESSIONAL work.. still I'll keep it in mind if I ever become unscouted :P

^If you only just uploaded an image, its likely not to have been registered yet. Search-engines take a while to index every website, and an image based search engine even longer as it has to download a large amout per image (over a million bits, as opposed to a 50-60's bits per word). ^

On topic: I agree with everything you say there. I think newgrounds is an excellant site, but as you say, needs some improvements :).
